Why Annual Maintenance Matters

Radiant floor heating systems are remarkably low-maintenance compared to forced-air systems. However, an annual checkup ensures peak efficiency, prevents costly repairs, and extends the life of your system by decades.

Fall Pre-Season Checklist

Complete these steps before the heating season begins (September–October):

Boiler Inspection

  • Check boiler for error codes or warning lights
  • Verify pilot light or ignition system is functioning
  • Inspect flue and venting for blockages
  • Check boiler pressure gauge (should read 12–18 PSI when cold)
  • Listen for unusual noises during startup

System Pressure & Fluid

  • Check system pressure at the manifold
  • Top off glycol antifreeze if pressure is low
  • Test glycol concentration (should be 30–50% for freeze protection)
  • Inspect expansion tank

Manifold & Zones

  • Visually inspect manifold for leaks or corrosion
  • Open and close each zone valve to ensure they're not stuck
  • Purge air from each zone
  • Check flow meters for proper readings

Thermostats & Controls

  • Replace thermostat batteries if applicable
  • Test each zone by setting thermostat above current temperature
  • Verify floor sensors are reading accurately
  • Update programmable schedules for winter
